Design Directions: Research for Photo Essay/Editorial

At first I wanted to look into the basic layouts of double page spreads used in magazines. As a general rule a lot of them use columns to base their layout. They will use 3-4 columns per page and then will decide how many columns to each object (text/image). They may look random but they will never not be able to be taken into grid format.

After deciding on my subject matter I have produced a survey which I asked people to fill out, the survey and the results are shown below:

I also looked into similar projects and found an article about a photographer, David Jay, who has put together an exhibition about looking into the beauty of scars, this is of interest to me as it is looking into something that people may not necessarily see beauty in and brining that beauty out of it, similarly to what I plan to do with tattoos. This is done not only through the imagery but through giving the story behind it.

I have also looked into tattoo photography as a whole and found some photographers such as Brian Cummings and his photography collection "Bodies of Work"  and Savitri Bastini's work entitle "Inked Beauty". This is intriguing to me as it highlights the fact that there other photographers around who are interested in photographing tattoos and showing not only the work that goes into them and how physically beautiful they can be but on top of this, the true meaning and story behind them. Here are some examples of their work which I aim to mirror/take inspiration from.

I also aim to conduct more research by going into tattoo parlours in town and asking them questions on what kind of thing they would expect from some photographing their work etc.
